The sorting and counting of votes in the Osun State Governorship election are already underway and the first results beginning to emerge from different parts of the state, as voting ended in some polling units across the state.
Penpushing reports that following complete accreditation and conclusion of voting, presiding officers have commenced the sorting and counting of ballots at polling units, with results beginning to emerge as at the time of filing this report.
The Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke it would be recalled that after casting his vote at his polling unit in Ede North, however, alleged that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) planned to bypass the prescribed process for collating election results.
Penpushing further reports that Adeleke who is seeking re-election on the Accord Party (AP) ticket warned that such a move would be unacceptable, but also expressed confidence that he would emerge victorious.
The Governor while addressing journalists after voting, claimed he had received information that election results might be taken directly to the state collation centre instead of passing through the legally prescribed stages.
“I have it on authority that they (INEC) don’t want to go through the normal process of units to wards and to local government. They just want to take it all the way to the collation centre, and that is not acceptable,” he said.
Penpushing also reports that the governor insisted that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) must adhere to the established collation process, emphasizing that the commission follow the rule, adding that, that is why he is alerting his people to watch out
The Governor, however, did not provide evidence to support the allegation, and while as at the time of filing this report the commission could not be immediately reach for comments.
Penpushing reports that as voting and collation continue, attention is expected to shift to the commission’s management of the results process amid scrutiny from political parties and election observers.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Bola Oyebamiji, on his part expressed confidence that he would win and urged the police and other security operatives to be proactive in ensuring the security of the state’s people.
Penpushing further reports that Oyebamiji sounded confidence shortly after casting his vote alongside his wife, Sekinat at his polling unit, Unit 11, Ward 9, Open Space Gantry Sawmill, Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area of the state.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) flagbearer commended the voter turnout, pointing out that it shows that people are not intimidated, and generally, things are going on fine across the state.
“INEC (people) are here; the voters are here; security operatives are here. I want to commend the large turnout of voters in Ikire. It shows that people are not intimidated, and generally, things are going on fine across the state’, he said.
Penpushing also reports that Oyebamiji popularly called AMBO emphasized that he believes the election will be credible, and confident that he would be the elected governor of the state at the end of the day.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate, Najeem Salaam, however, raised concerns over the alleged non-recognition of his party agents in several areas across the state during Saturday’s election.
