The Ogun State Chapter of the Freelance and Independent Broadcasters Association of Nigeria (FIBAN) has joined millions of Nigerians in honouring the memory of the heroes and heroines of the June 12, 1993 struggle whose sacrifices laid the foundation for the democratic freedoms being we enjoy in the country.
Penpushing reports that Chairman of the association, Chief Olalekan Shoyinka in a statement stated that June 12 is more than a date on our national calendar; it is a symbol of the people’s determination to defend justice, equity, popular mandate and good governance
The broadcaster popularly called Ayinla Egba emphasized that it reminds us that democracy thrives when citizens remain vigilant, informed and actively involved in shaping the future of their nation.
‘As broadcasters, we are uniquely positioned between the people and those in authority. We hear the concerns of the masses, understand their aspirations and appreciate the responsibilities of leadership’.
‘We therefore reaffirm our commitment to remaining the voice of the voiceless, a platform for constructive engagement and a defender of truth, accountability and the public interest. We assure Nigerians that we will not relent in this responsibility’, Shoyinka wrote.
Penpushing also reports that the body while acknowledging the economic and social challenges confronting the country, urged citizens not to surrender to hopelessness or despair, expressing optimism that Nigeria has overcome difficult moments in the past and possesses the human and natural resources required to achieve greater progress.
The statement pointed out that Nigerians must therefore continue to believe in their collective ability to build a more prosperous, secure and united nation, and equally encouraged them to use the period for sincere reflection on the kind of democracy and leadership they desire in next political dispensation
‘As this is the last Democracy Day celebration before the 2027 General Elections, we call on Nigerians to use this period for sincere reflection on the kind of democracy and leadership they desire. The ballot remains one of the most powerful tools for change in any democratic society’, Shoyinka added.
‘We must reject vote-buying, political inducement and every form of money politics that has continued to undermine good governance and national development. The future of our country cannot be mortgaged for temporary gains. Rather, citizens should prioritize competence, character, integrity, vision and proven capacity when making electoral choices’.
‘The journey to a better Nigeria requires the collective efforts of both leaders and followers. Let us therefore uphold the ideals of June 12 by promoting unity, peaceful participation, accountability and responsible citizenship. Together, we can strengthen our democracy and build the Nigeria of our dreams. Happy Democracy Day!’, Shoyinka added
