A retired controller of works at the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, AbdulRazaq Ajani, has been murdered on New Year’s Day in Ilorin, shirtly after returning home with his wife and children from a trip to his hometown, Offa.

Penpushing reports that the brutal incident occurred at about 3 p.m. at Dele Gege Street, off Awolowo Road in the Tanke Area of the town, when the assassins casually entered the retiree compound to carry out the killing

The family members of the deceased explained that four young men between 18 and 22 years old, were later sighted in a review of CCTV camera recordings with two of them standing beside Ajani’s gate, one of them sipping water from a plastic bottle, while the two others strolled into the compound.

Penpushing further reports that it was not clear how they arrived in the area, adding that on noticing the young men from one of the two sitting rooms on the ground floor of the one-storey main building, the retired officer reportedly rose to meet them at the main door.

The bereaved family stated that the suspects in the video appeared to be engaging Ajani in a discussion until he was suddenly lying face down on the ground, having hacked him with what looked like small axes.

Penpushing also reports that after the gruesome murder the assassins took to their heels from the scene before the howling of the family members drew the attention of neighbours, while as at the time of visit to the scene at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, the police had evacuated the body and left.

The deceased main sitting room a few metres from the blood-splattered corridor where the retired controller was hacked to death by the assassins, was filled with some family members and mourners, while neighbours spoke highly of him and his wife, who owns a popular confectionery, Reo Cakes, in Ilorin.

Penpushing reports that as at the time of filing this report the Kwara State Police Command Public Relations Officer, was yet to make any official statement on the sad development

Meanwhile, the late Ajani was a civil engineer, who retired from the Federal Ministry of Works about four years ago but was said to have accepted a contract appointment at the ministry last year.
