Oyo state government to turn waste to wealth, says environment commissioner

The Oyo State Government  said  it is focusing on turning waste to wealth and  ensure cleaner and healthier environment, adding that efforts are in place to re-orientate residents of the state toward proper disposition of refuse and how to turn it to wealth.

Penpushing reports that the Commissioner for Environment Dr. Abdullateef Oyeleke while joining the “Clean Up Oyo State” team to clean some areas in Ibadan as part of activities making this years World Environmental Day, noted that there is a lot of value in waste noting that waste can be turned to wealth, and urged residents to key into government initiative in ensuring cleaner environment.

The Commissioner stated that one of the steps taking by the government was the ‘Clean and Green’ policy introduced by the state government which cut across all the 33 local governments of the state that encourages people to take sanitation as one of their duty.

“Bring your waste to us, we shall collect it, recycled it and turn it to wealth, people should separate their waste, we want to return our environment to its original form to enhance ecosystem of the state, our people should clean their environment and imbibed hygienic behavior’.

The leader of team ‘Clean Up Nigeria’, Olugbenga Ogunbowale stated that the campaign was to changed the mindset of the people towards waste disposal waste, saying that only a cleaner cities can guarantee healthier people.

“We want to changed perception of people towards saying that Ibadan is the dirtiest city, we want to make Oyo state role model for other city in Nigeria and Africa as a whole”,Ogunbowale said

“Dirtiness has a way of affecting our lives, we are here to do a massive clean up and we have been doing it not just today, we are also engaging stakeholders in ensuring cleaner environment, people should support the initiative because government alone cannot do it’, he stated.

Penpushing also reports that one of the volunteers for ‘Clean Up Oyo State’, Miss Oyinkansola Lawal said that her participation in the voluntary work was borne out of passion in promoting healthier and cleaner society, saying that Nigerians must live an environment free of dirty, and total eradication of dirtiness.
