The Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka has been decorated as “Special Marshall” of Operation Amotekun in Ogun State, a development which caused excitement for Governor Dapo Abiodun and his cabinet members, as well as residents in the state.

Penpushing reports the decoration of Professor of Comparative Literature and Nobel Prize winner for Literature in 1986, took place during the inauguration of the local security outfit at Governor’s office parade ground in Abeokuta.

The excited Governor shared the pictures of the event on his official Twitter handle, adding that he had the honour of inaugurating the indigenous security outfit, Amotekun Corps in the state, with the commissioning of patrol vans and motorcycles.

I had the honour of inaugurating the indigenous security outfit, AMOTEKUN Corps in Ogun State earlier today. We also commissioned patrol vans and motorcycles. Led by Rtd CP David Akinremi, the Corps has as Special Marshall, Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka who was kind enough to grace the event. #BuildingOurFutureTogether #ISEYA #OgunState”

Penpushing further reports that, It is recalled that, the South-West Governor had  on January 9, launched the security outfit, code-named “Operation Amotekun” to defend the region against rising insecurity marked by indiscriminate killings, kidnappings, banditry and destruction of farmlands.

The launch initiative at the initial stage caused  controversy across the country as the  Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami speaking on behalf of the Nigerian government  described the project as illegal.

Penpushing also reports that, thereafter, the six governors and the Minister agreed to give legal backing to the project, with explanation that  it won’t be a regional outfit as earlier conceived, but state-based.

The Governors and the Federal Government in the same vein agreed that the new initiative will be done in partnership with the police to deal with crime-related challenges.
