The Ogun State Government has resolved to observe June 12 anniversary in a special and reflective manner, and subsequently suspended the activities earlier outlined for the commemoration of democracy day
Penpushing reports that the decision was contained in a statement on Thursday issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Tokunbo Talabi explaining that the development became necessary in view of prevailing national circumstances and in recognition of the need for collective responsibility and sensitivity at this time
‘The Ogun State Government hereby informs public servants, stakeholders, development partners, and members of the general public that the 2026 Democracy Day celebration in the State will be observed in a special and reflective manner’, Tabi wrote.
‘Consequently, the activities earlier outlined for the commemoration of Democracy Day on June 12 will no longer hold in their originally planned format. This decision was reached after careful consideration of prevailing national circumstances and in recognition of the need for collective responsibility and sensitivity at this time’, he added.
Penpushing further reports that Talabi stated that while June 12 remains a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic history and a symbol of the people’s enduring commitment to democratic ideals, the State Government has deemed it appropriate to mark the occasion in a more solemn and restrained manner.
The statement stated that the observance will provide an opportunity for reflection on the gains of democracy, the sacrifices of its heroes, and the collective responsibility of all citizens to continue supporting good governance, peace, and development.
The Government appreciates the understanding, cooperation, and continued support of all stakeholders and residents as we commemorate this important national day. We thank the people of Ogun State for their unwavering commitment to the progress, unity, and prosperity of our dear State.
