The Coalition of Civil Societies Ogun State Chapter on Monday joined the rest of the world to celebrate 2023 World Human Rights Day, with the theme, Consolidation and Sustaining Human Rights Culture into Future’

Penpushing reports that at the ceremony held at Press Centre, Iwe-Iroyin House located in Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta, the chapter chairman Barrister Solomon Bankole declared that democracy is in comatose in Nigeria

The chairman pointed out that there is nothing called human rights in Nigeria, stressing that people are suffering and those at the helms of affairs have disappointed the citizens, having neglected them and only interested in their selfish interest.

Penpushing further reports that the era of civil societies celebrating politicians and those in power is gone, and equally challenged security operatives in the country on the need to be more proactive in fighting corruption

‘There is nothing called human rights in Nigeria. I say openly here that human rights is a language of scam in Nigeria. No politicians will be celebrated again, that era has gone. We shall rather celebrate the less privileged’, Bankole stated

‘We are not enjoying this country. I want to challenge all people in uniform on need to vigorously fight corruption, injustice. It is the country system which made area boys. Coalition of Civil Sociétés ready to challenge government from January

Penpushing also reports that a notable leader of the coalition Comrade Adeola Soetan in his remarks recalled his travails in the hands of bad leadership in the country, adding that as a student’s activist, he ended up spending 13 years to study a 4-year programme in the university

The activist told the gathering that as undergraduate of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife   he was a victim of bad governance having been suspended number of times and thrown into detention, a development which forced him to spend number of years as student in the university

‘Let me disclosed this, because of bad governance and maladministration I spent 13 years as student of Obafemi Awolowo University for fighting human rights course. I was thrown into prisons number of times. It was Gani Fawehinmi and Femi Falana who eventually came to y rescue’, Soetan said

Penpushing reports that the human right activist, however, called on all civil societies to rise up to the challenges of addressing human rights abuses, pointing out that human rights is losing credibility in Nigeria

‘Our job is to continue to address the issues of those trampling on human rights of the people. Human Rights in Nigeria is losing credibility. Human Rights activists must not compromise, but must rise up to the task’, he added

Penpushing reports that the Comptroller Nigeria Immigration Services (NIS),Ogun State Command, Bosede Olufunmilayo speaking on the role of Nigeria Immigration in curbing crimes, noted that the fight against crime in the society must be seen as collective responsibilities

‘The clergies, teachers, parents and every good citizens must be involved. It should not be left for security agencies alone. The security agents outside there need your cooperation, support and supply of vital information on activities of any suspicious criminal be it a Nigerian or foreigner alike’,

‘The value of information in efficient security management is undoubtedly immeasurable. Finally, we must resolve to let all hands be on deck, so that collectively as a people we shall maintain eternal vigilance’
