The controversial order of the Lagos State Judicial Panel on Inquiry over police brutality that the Lekki toll gate should be reopen has pit the youths against the police, as the youth embarked on protest inspite threat by the police to stop the protest.

Penpushing reports that, the heavy presence and intimidation of the police at the toll gate on Saturday did not stop the large number of protesters, even when some of them were hounded into Black Maria.

The scores of policemen drafted there were seen struggling with protesters, who were also seen in twos and threes on different occasions, but the police succeeded in arresting about 28 of the protesters and locked them in black maria.

Penpushing further reports that, the resilience protesters still struggled from the black maria to air their views, stressing that, it was their fundamental human rights to express their displeasure without violence.

The police also impounded a vehicle conveying a speaker, sound system, generator and some protest material, but a Youth Rights Campaign in reaction to the development, called for the release of all protesters that were arrested at the tollgate.

Penpushing reports that, the group in a statement, emanded the immediate and unconditional release of one of its members, Moshood Oshufunrewa, and other activists arrested at the tollgate.

“We affirm that peaceful protest is a right which cannot be undermined or abridged under any pretext. The actions of the Police today presents an escalation of the developing civilian capitalist dictatorship which the APC regime is slowly but surely morphing into,” the group said.

Meanwhile, as at the time of filing  this report, additional policemen, led by  the Rapid Respond Squad(RRS) led by its commander, Yinka Egbeyemi have arrived at the Lekki tollgate, and it is recalled that some policemen had been at the Lekki tollgate since Friday, to forestall any protest.
