The famous former Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Ogun State Chapter Alhaji Akeem Bodunrin, popularly known as Iyeru, has been reported dead.

Penpushing reports that the cause of Iyeru’s death which occurred on Saturday was yet unknown as at the time of filing this report, however, his remains were committed to mother earth on Sunday at about 2pm in his private residence, quarry road in Abeokuta.

The demise of the motor parks’ warlord has thrown the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), into mourning, while record has it that the deceased played a major role in the affairs of transport unions and park management in the state.

Penpushing further reports that Iyeru was appointed to lead the Ogun State Park Management structure during the period of the crisis that affected the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in the state.

The deceased activities in the transport sector made him a well-known figure among transport workers and other stakeholders in the state and environs, while his name featured prominently in developments surrounding the management of parks and garages across Ogun state.

Penpushing also reports that the deceased tenure and activities in the sector attracted controversy, particularly during disputes involving rival transport unions, while record has it that  in December 2022, rival groups exchanged allegations following a violent clash at an event in Itori attended by Governor Dapo Abiodun.

The late former chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), however, denied allegations linking him to the violence.

Penpushing reports that Ogun State Government has mourned the passing of Iyeru, who as at the time of the demise was the Chairman of the Ogun State Park Management Services (OGSPAM).

The Commissioner for Transportation Engr. Olugbenga Dairo in a statement said his death was painful loss to the government, the transport sector, organised transport unions and, indeed, the entire people of Ogun State.

‘Alhaji Bodunrin was a prominent stakeholder whose contributions to the development, regulation and peaceful administration of the state’s transport sector will remain significant’, the statement read.

As Chairman of OGSPAM, Iyeru demonstrated remarkable commitment to maintaining order, discipline and coordination within the state’s motor parks and garages. His leadership role placed him at the centre of efforts to foster harmonious relationships among transport operators, government agencies and other stakeholders in the sector’, Dairo wrote.

‘Beyond his official responsibilities, Alhaji Bodunrin was a man who commanded considerable influence and respect among transport operators and members of his community. His demise therefore creates a significant vacuum that will be deeply felt by his family, associates, colleagues and the wider transport community’, it added.

‘On behalf of HE Prince Dapo Abiodun Governor of Ogun State and the Government and good people of Ogun State, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the immediate family of Alhaji Akeem Bodunrin, the leadership and members of OGSPAM, transport unions and associations, as well as all those who mourn this painful loss’, Dairo stated.

‘At this difficult moment, we pray that Almighty Allah forgives his shortcomings, grants him Al-Jannatul Firdaus and gives his family, friends, colleagues and associates the strength and fortitude to bear the irreparable loss. May Almighty Allah grant the soul of Alhaji Akeem Bodunrin eternal rest’, the statement stated.
