Former Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido emerges new leader of Islamic sect

The outspoken former Emir of Kano, Alhaji Lamido Sanusi has been selected on Friday as leader of  Tijjaniya Islamic sect with members across West, North and East Africa, a position his grandfather held as first leader in Nigeria

Penpushing reports that, unanimous selection of the known frankly speaking former Central Bank Governor took place  at the annual gathering of the sect in Sokoto following a meeting by two factions of the sect which resolved to mend fences.

The findings showed that after the death of Sanusi grandfather, the sect broke into two factions following the selection of Isiyaka Rabiu as his successor, and the other faction rallied behind Dahiru Bauchi and stuck to its different ways until Rabiu’s death.

Penpushing further reports following resolved differences of the two factions which pave for selection of Sanusi as the new leader of the group, Bauchi was also in attendance to grace the occasion of Sanusi emergence.

The number of members who spoke at the event which include Ahmed Almustapha, a notable member said members were happy with Sanusi’s selection, saying his emergence was a welcome development.

“This is a welcome development; we all accept the selection of Sanusi as the new leader of Tijjaniya. With him, the sect will be united again. Sanusi is well educated both in Islamic and western education. His leadership will make the sect stronger and with unity among us’, Almustapha said.

Penpushing also reports that, it is recalled that Sanusi was removed by the Kano State Government, and this followed disagreement between the Governor and Sanusi, who the Governor considered as too powerful to be curtail.

The fearless former Emir was after his sacked by the Kano State Government was banished to Loko Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, and having spent some weeks, got his freedom and has since relocated to Lagos State where he is said to be living happily
