The Olabisi Onabanjo University  (OOU) was founded on 7th July, 1982 as Ogun State University and was renamed Olabisi Onabanjo University on 29th May, 2001 in honour of Chief (Dr.) Olabisi Onabanjo whose efforts as the Governor of the state gave birth to the University.

To mark the 40th anniversary of the University, it commenced the activities on Sunday 5th February with a Thanksgiving service at the St. Peter’s Cathedral, Ake, Abeokuta. In attendance were the Chairman of the Council of the University Professor Oluwatoyin Ashiru OON, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adedeji Agboola, the Deputy Vice-Chancellors administration and academics, the University Librarian and the Bursar as well as other management staff of the University including members of the Alumni Associations from Abeokuta and Abuja Chapters.

Interestingly, as the University is marking its 40th anniversary, on Monday, 5th February 2023, Alumnus of the University in the Ogun State Judiciary did the University proud as seven out of the eight High Court Judges appointed by the Ogun State Government were alumnus of the University. The Programme came with the swearing-in ceremony of the acting President, Customary Court of Appeal and eight Honourable Judges of the High Court. The swearing-in event was performed by His Excellency, Prince (Dr.) Dapo Abiodun, MFR, The Governor of Ogun State at June 12, Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The eight newly sworn-in Judges are:

(1)Mr. Bamidele Adedapo Adebayo the former Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice. Justice Bamidele Adebayo attended the then Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University) between 1986 and 1989 for his degree in Law and was called to the Bar on the 12th of December, 1990. He joined the Ogun State Civil Service on 16th December, 1991 as a Pupil State Counsel and rose through the ranks to become the Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary in April, 2022. The position he held until his appointment as a Judge. He is a member of the Legal Continue Education of NBA Abeokuta Branch .

(2)Mrs. Oluwafunke Omolara Odubanjo worked as counsel in the chambers of Chief Toye Coker and Co. as well as the law firm of Adesina Adesanya &Co. Mrs. Odubanjo studied law at Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University) between 1993 and 1999. She was called to the Bar in 2001 and is currently running a doctorate programme in law at the Olabisi Onabanjo University.

(3)Mr. Ireti-Olu Babatunde Awofeso. He obtained LL.B (Hons) in Law in 1987 from the University of Benin. He worked as Counsel and as a Senior Associate in the law firms of Koku & Oyewunmi, Adedeji Adekoya & Co, Adegbuyi, Ayeni & Associates and Aina Blankson & Co.

(4)Mrs. Adeola Ireti Adelaja obtained her LL.B degree in Law in 1988 from Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University) in 1988. She attended the Nigerian Law School, Lagos and was called to the Bar in 1989. She worked briefly with the Ogun State Ministry of Justice between 1991-1992 before venturing into private practice. She worked at Laiyemo & Co, A.F. Okunuga & Co and Oladipo Opanubi &Co through the years before her appointment as a Senior Magistrate in the Ogun State Judiciary in September, 2004. She rose through the ranks to the post of a Chief Magistrate before her present appointment.

(5)Mrs. Basirat Bolanle Adebowale FICMC studied law at the Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University) where she obtained her LL.B degree in 1996. She proceeded to the Nigerian Law School, Lagos and was called to the Bar in 1998. She obtained her LL.M in 2003. She is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators.

(6)Mr. Ayodele Adebajo Omoniyi was awarded the Bachelor of Law Degree (LL.B. Hons) in 1990 from Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University) in 1990. He thereafter proceeded to the Nigeria Law School, Victoria Island, Lagos State and was called to the Nigerian Bar in December 1991. He worked in the law firm of Segun Emehin & Co, Leslie Road, Ilaro. He established his own Law Firm of Bayo Omoniyi & Co. Ilaro. He has been in active legal practice for a period of 32 years.

(7)Mr. Sunday Olufemi Adeniyi obtained his Bachelor of Laws (LLB) in 1997 from the Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University) in 1987. He proceeded to the Nigerian Law School, Lagos and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1998. In February 2003, he went into partnership with Segun Ashaye to establish a law firm known as ADENIYI, ASHAYE & CO Lagos State where he worked until his appointment as a Judge.

(8)Mr. Abimbola Christopher Shokunbi read law and obtained a Bachelor of the Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University) in 1999. He attended the Nigerian Law School, Abuja and was called to the Bar in 2001. In May, 2022 having passed through the Law Practice tutelage at Femi Okunnu (SAN) & Co, he set up his law firm Bimbo Shokunbi & Co where he is the Principal Counsel and Lead Strategist until his elevation to the Bench.
