The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Wednesday disclosed that no fewer than 532 people lost their lives in road accident between January and September this year in three Southwest states comprising Osun, Ondo and Oyo state.

Penpushing reports that the  Zonal Commanding Officer, RS11HQ, Oshogbo, Assistant Corp Marshall Emmanuel Abe made this known while speaking  during the flag-off of “2021 Ember-Months Mega Rally” organised by the  Oyo State Sector Command  in Ibadan, Oyo State Capital.

The Zonal Commanding Officer lamented that those who died falls between the young and productive age bracket stating that the figure would have been higher if not for timely rescue operations by its personnel, who rescued 3,816 people from untimely death and injuries.

Penpushing further reports that Abe, who spoke on behalf of the Corps Marshall, Boboye Oyeyemi said that 2,729 people were rescued alive with various degree of injuries, saying that most of the crashes were caused by over speeding, route violation, bad roads and poor visibility due to night travelling particularly along Lagos/Ibadan, Ibadan/Ife, Ibadan/Oyo, Oyo/Ogbomosho, Ife/Ilesha, Ilesha/Akure, Akure/Owo and Benin/Lagos express way.

“It is in line with this that the FRSC adopted “maintain safe trip, avoid night travelling, and enjoy quality road experience” as the theme for this year’s Ember months campaign to provide avenue for the convergence of relevant stakeholders in road traffic management to tackle existing challenges. It is not only ember months that caused road crashes but peoples mobility behavior during the period.”

The Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC) boss however urged drivers to take care and maintain their vehicles, avoid making any unplanned trip without considering their health status, avoid driving recklessly, and avoid making calls while driving, and refrain from driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

Penpushing also reports that, the Commissioner for Transport and Public Work in Oyo State, Prof. Daud Sangodoyin in his remarks  urged drivers to avoid whatever that can endanger their life’ while plying roads particularly during this Ember months.
