A Nigerian Senator representing Abia North of Abia State, Senator Orji Kalu has claimed that the salaries of federal lawmakers in the country is nothing to write home about, and specifically declared that he and his colleagues at the upper chamber are paid almost nothing as salaries.
Penpushing reports that Kalu, a former Governor of Abia State, who was convicted of stealing public funds as Governor but had his conviction cancelled for technical reasons by the Supreme Court, made this known in a viral video shared on his verified Facebook page on Sunday
“We are being paid almost nothing in the Senate. I sit in the Senate, and when people discuss the salary of a senator and other people, I laugh because it’s nothing to write home about’, Kalu emphasised.
Penpushing further reports that Kanu, who is chairman of the Senate Committee on Privatisation, stressed in the video that senators are underpaid contradicts the reality of most Nigerians, adding that senators monthly take-home salary is less than a million naira.
The federal lawmaker said this in a country where the minimum wage has just been increased to N70,000, each senator also gets about N13.5 million monthly as office running cost, thus making them some of the highest paid lawmakers in the world.
