Gunmen have shot dead a police inspector attached to the Ekiadolor Area Command at a checkpoint during a routine stop-and-search operation in Benin, the Edo state capital.

Penpushing reports that Edo State Police Command Public Relations Officer Moses Yamu, confirmed the incident in a statement, explaining that the incident occurred on Friday when the gunmen opened fire on the police team.

The police spokesperson, a chief superintendent of police, said the incident occurred at about 12:00 p.m. when an unregistered, black, tinted Lexus SUV approached a checkpoint in the city and refused to stop, despite being flagged down.

Penpushing further reports that Yamu stated that the suspicious behaviour of the vehicle’s occupants prompted the officers to attempt further security checks, adding that in the course of the checks one of the gang shot the inspector at close range and zoomed off

“Tragically, in the course of this lawful engagement, one of the occupants of the vehicle suddenly opened fire on the inspector at close range and zoomed off’, Yamu stated.

Penpushing also reports that he said the police inspector died on the spot, adding that the Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika, had ordered an investigation and a manhunt for the perpetrators.

The statement stated that all intelligence and operational assets had been deployed to track down the assailants and ensure they face justice, adding that the commissioner has appealed to the residents to help with credible information, especially regarding any sighting of a vehicle matching the description.

Penpushing reports that the police boss reassured the public of the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, stressing that security had been heightened across the state as the Yuletide approaches.
