The 78-year-old Presidential Candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar has resigned his membership of the party, an indication that he is ready to formalise his alliance with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition.

Penpushing reports that Abubakar a founding member of the party in 1998, and former Vice President explained that his resignation was with immediate effect citing a departure from the party’s founding principles.

The letter addressed to the Jada 1 ward chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Jada local government area of Adamawa State and dated July 14, 2025, stated that he finds it necessary to quit due to the current trajectory being faced by the party

“I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for. It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognizing the irreconcilable differences that have emerged’, he wrote

The party chieftain who served as Nigeria’s vice president between 1999 and 2007, expressed gratitude to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for given him opportunity to contest the presidency under the platform twice.

Penpushing further reports that it is recalled that he was also a presidential aspirant on the platform of the party in 2007 before decamping to the Action Congress (AC), a forerunner of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The perennial presidential contender exit marks another major turning point in his long and eventful political career, which has seen him criss-cross party lines in pursuit of electoral goals, while record has it that he has sought Nigeria’s top job six times since 1993 under different political banners.

Penpushing also reports that the political parties he contested under the platforms including the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Action Congress (AC), and All Progressives Congress (APC).

The perpetual presidential aspirant remains one of Nigeria’s most enduring political figures, known for his deep political networks, expansive wealth, and persistent ambition to lead the country.
