The former president of Mali, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, who was sacked through a coup by military junta has died at age 76, as confirmed by his family, but cause of death was yet unknown as at time of this report.

Penpushing reports that, Keita was said to have died on Sunday in Bamako while record has it that he suffered a mini-stroke after the rebellion released him on August 27 and returned him to his residence in Bamako, under surveillance.

The ousted leader who ruled Mali from 2013 to 2020 was on the following month of his release and stroke attack sent, to the United Arab Emirates(UAE) for treatment, and it is also recalled that, he  was two years into his second five-year term when in 2020 he faced widespread street protests against his government.

Penpushing further reports that, he  was toppled by the military which is now under regional sanctions for failing to restore civilian rule, and it is also on record that in the weeks before the 2020 coup, he had been struggling with protests fuelled by his handling of a jihadist insurgency and failure to turn around Mali’s floundering economy.

The embattled Keita was forced out of office on August 18, 2020, by young military officers who staged an uprising at a base near Bamako before heading into the city, where they seized him and other leaders.
