The Ogu General Assembly (OGA) a socio-cultural organisation has called on Nigerian Government to expedite action on the inclusion of Ogu history, language, literature, and culture in the school curricula, especially at the basic education level.

Penpushing reports the call was contained in a communique issued at the end of the assembly summit held on Saturday at the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON), Topo in Badagry town of Lagos State.

The assembly in the communique explained that, the inaugural summit with the theme ‘Mijepo: Conversations on Ogu Identity, History and Culture, to deliberate on the past, present situation and future of the Ogu as an ethnic group in Nigeria’, main objective  is to mediate a common identity and central voice for the Ogu wherever they may be found.

‘The Ogu have come together under Ogu General Assembly to provide cultural consciousness, protection, garner strength, and pursue social justice and fairness for all Ogu home and in the Diaspora, hence Mijepo’, the summit stated.

Penpushing further reports that the meeting emphasized that,  Ogu are more determined to champion their cause with a central, united, and coherent voice, articulated through a central body, Ogu General Assembly.

‘The Ogu are also prepared to reaffirm their history, culture, and social values, to move their narrative away from the domain of perpetual coloniality where minority identities were often concocted for the purpose of domination, division, denigration, and marginalisation’.

Penpushing also reports that, the communique said the the Ogu are more determined than ever before to chart the cause of growth, development, and progress of every space they occupy within Nigeria, especially the Southwest.

‘The Summit further resolved that the Ogu will continue to play their part in ensuring growth, development, and peaceful co-existence with other ethnic groups, despite the vicissitudes occasioned by gross misunderstandings of their identity and values’, the communique added.

The summit said the assembly  appreciated the commitment of all Gunuvi at home and in the Diaspora, traditional rulers, interest groups, corporate organisations, the media, and friends of the Ogu whose support made the summit a huge success.

Penpushing reports that, the meeting was attended by Ogu Aholu, Totagan, Komegan, Awono, Zangan (Traditional Rulers and Chiefs), various Ogu interest groups and representatives of community development associations, Ogu in the Diaspora, and friends of the Ogu.

Meanwhile, signatories pf the communique include: Prof Jendele Hungbo (President and Convener),Pro  Mejai Avoseh (Chairman, Summit Planning Committee) ,Dr. Anthony Dansu (Trustee) Dr. Babatunde Olaide-Mesewaku (Trustee),Mr. Steve Agboyinu (Trustee) and Mr. Mewhenu Hosu (Secretary/Trustee)
