The Nigerian government has inaugurated a 10-member committee on the implementation of the recommendations of the Steve Oronsaye panel on the restructuring and rationalisation of federal agencies, parastatals and commissions.

Penpushing reports that the inauguration of the committee was done by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, who is also a member, on behalf of President Bola Tinubu,

The Director of Information, Secretary to the Government of the Federation Segun Imohiosen in a statement explained that the implementation of the White Papers on the report is aimed at reducing cost of governance and streamlining efficiency across the governance value chain.

Penpushing further reports that the 10 members of the committee include George Akume,( Secretary to the Government the Federation), Lateef Fagbemi (Attorney General of the Federation/ Minister of Justice), Abubakar Bagudu (Minister of Budget and Economic Planning),Folashade Yemi-Esan (Head of the Civil Service of the Federation) and Hadiza Bala Usman (Special Adviser to the President, Policy and Coordination)

The others are Dasuki Ibrahim Arabi (Director-General Bureau of Public Service Reform), Abdullahi Abubakar Gumel (Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Ibrahim Kunle Olarewaju (Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly (House of Representatives), Hakeem Muri Okunola (Principal Secretary to the President), Richard Pheelangwah and Permanent Secretary, Cabinet Affairs Office.

Penpushing also reports that Akume outlined the general guidelines of the Committee as follows: to review current mandates to understand the existing functions, responsibilities, and objectives outlined in the mandates of the Agencies., identify redundancies and overlaps or conflicting objectives among the mandates of different organisational units and define strategic objectives to ensure the revised mandates align with the strategic objectives and priorities of the government.

The guidelines include: engage key stakeholders and gather input and feedback on the proposed revisions to the mandates, draft clear, concise, and actionable revised mandates for the organisations involved in the restructuring and ensure the revised mandates comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and policies governing government operations.

Penpushing reports that the committee is equally expected to obtain necessary approvals from relevant authorities for the revised mandates, effectively communicate the revised mandates to employees and stakeholders and implement the revised mandates effectively and monitor their implementation to identify any issues or challenges.

The statement by the Director Information in the office of the Secretary to Government of Federation Segun Imohiosen emphasized that President Tinubu has given the committee a 12-week deadline to submit its report.

Penpushing further reports that it is recalled that the Nigerian government had late February listed the agencies of government to be scrapped, merged or relocated as recommended by the Oronsaye report which dates back to 2012.
