The Nigerian Government has confirmed an attempt by Nigerien protesters, believe to be loyalists of coupists to attack its embassy in Niamey, Capital of the troubled Niger Republic, but were repelled by the military.

Penpushing reports that Nigeria’s Ambassador to Niger, Mohamed Usman, made this known in a statement following a video shared on social media of a building being set ablaze which many claimed is the Nigerian embassy.

The statement signed by a staff of the embassy Liti Auwalu, explained that as at the time of filing this report the embassy is well guarded by the Nigerien military and other security authorities, adding that the circulated video was fake which should be disregarded

Penpushing further reports that it is recalled that the attempted attack occurred on Sunday, 30 July, 2023, precisely four days after the coupists sacked President Mohamed Bazoum who has since remained in detention with his family.

The Nigeria Government, however, has continued to operate its embassy in the country despite the coup led by General Abdourahamane Tchiani on Wednesday, 26 July, 2023, and the strong response of the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS).

Penpushing also reports that it is recalled that the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) in response to the coup imposed sanctions on Niger Republic in a bid to reinstate Bazoum, who is the democratically elected President of the country.

The leadership of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), had earlier given the junta a seven days ultimatum which they ignored, and thereafter in another meeting held last Thursday ordered the activation and deployment of its standby force to restore constitutional order in the country.
