The International Press Centre (IPC) n collaboration with the Open Society Foundation (OSF) will be organizing a one-day media roundtable and stakeholders’ forum on journalists’ safety and protecting freedom of expression in the age of misinformation and disinformation.

Penpushing reports that Programme Officer of the Centre Melody Akinjiyan said the conference is scheduled to hold on Friday, May 5, 2023 at Kakanfo Inn and Conference Center, 1 Nihinlola Street, Off Joyce ‘B’ Road, Off Ring Road, Ibadan Oyo State Capital

The Programme Officer explained that the roundtable is organised under the auspices of the Nigerian Journalists’ Safety Initiative, one of the components of a three-year project on ‘Safety Awareness and Impactful Reporting of Communities’ being implemented by International Press Centre (IPC) with the support of the Open Society Foundation (OSF).

Penpushing further reports that Akiniyan said the overall objective of the project is to expand the frontiers of safety of journalists and press freedom in Nigeria through continued sensitisation of media professionals and other relevant stakeholders.

The centre stated that the purpose of the activity includes: to present 2022 annual findings and outcomes from monitoring attacks on journalists to media stakeholders; identify the challenges and factors militating against the safety of journalists in the country; propose workable frameworks for the protection of journalists and the defense of journalists under attack and agree on joint actions to protect journalists in Nigeria.

Penpushing also reports that the outcome of the activity is that media stakeholders make commitments and develop a roadmap for the safety of journalists in Nigeria incorporating effective response mechanisms when media outlets and journalists come under attack as well as orientation for media professionals on safety consciousness.
