A Naval operative and eight other people have been abducted by gunmen at Classic Point Hotel, a relaxation spot in Ibaka, in Mbo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, but as at the time of filing this report the abductors have not contacted the families of the victims.
Penpushing reports that the Akwa Ibom State Police Command Public Relations Officer Timfon John, confirmed the incident, explaining that the Commissioner of Police, Waheed Ayilara, led a team of operatives to the community, where he was briefed on the incident.
The latest incident occurred a few days after eighteen passengers and a driver, travelling from Uyo to Port Harcourt, were kidnapped at Azumini in Abia State, while there have been reported cases of kidnap-for-random in the state.
Penpushing further reports that Azumini, where the passengers were intercepted and kidnapped, is a boundary community between Abia and Akwa Ibom States, while it is on record that gunmen have stepped up criminal activities in the area with the abduction of high-profile persons.
The paramount ruler in Mbo local government area, it is recalled was kidnapped two months ago, having stormed his palace at Ebughu in the night, and this was a week after the wife of Asuquo Okon, a prominent politician in the area, was abducted in Oron, a neighbouring local government area to Mbo.
Penpushing also reports that in similar development, in the same area, Dr John Esu, was abducted, prompting the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) to direct its members to withdraw its services from both public and private hospitals in the state.
The same incident occurred last December when a High Court judge, Joy Unwana, was kidnapped while her security guard was shot dead while returning to Uyo from Oron Local Government Area, where she had a court session, however, the judge regained freedom after spending five days in captivity.
