The leadership of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) has declared that tryes produced as new in Nigeria are sub-standard, hence, the rush for fairly used, popularly called ‘Tokunbo’, by the transport operators
Penpushing reports that Assistant National Secretary of the association, Tiwalade Akingbade made this observation in his speech at the official flag off of 2023 Ember months mega rally held on Monday at Its-Oshin motorpark in Abeokuta, Ogun State Capital
The scribe, therefore tasked Nigerian government on the need to rise up to the challenges, stressing that the bitter truth was that the fairly used tyres brought from foreign countries are more durable and effective more than those being produced in Nigeria
‘The new tyres we are buying here in Nigeria are sub-standard. The foreign used popularly known as ‘Tokunbo’ last longer than new ones, despite the fact that the ones are being sell at outrageous prices’, Akingbade emphasized
Penpushing further reports that, the association boss noted that road transportation remained the most used means of transportation worldwide, as it occupies about 90% to 95% of users, because it is the only mode of transportation, that starts and ends with same mode, unlike air transportation, rail and sea transportation.

The association, therefore called on Nigerian Government on need to approved duty waiver to operators of the road, as done for the aircraft operators, just as it pointed out that demography shows younger ones are more involved in road crashes
Penpushing also reports that Akingbade , explained this was as a result of youthful exuberance, adding that they are always in a hurry, hence, they get more of larger percentage of road crashes across the country
