The Edo State House of Assembly has commenced impeachment proceedings against the Deputy Governor of the state, Philip Shaibu, following a petition against him (Shaibu) by twenty-one of the twenty-four members of the assembly.
Penpushing reports the Majority Leader, Hon Charity Aiguobarueghian of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Ovia North-East 1), on Wednesday announced the impeachment notice, explaining that the petition was dated March 5,2024.
The lawmaker added that the petition was based on perjury and the disclosure of government secrets, emphasisng that the number of members who signed the petition was higher than two-thirds which is required by the constitution.
Penpushing further reports that Speaker of the House of Assembly, Rt Hon Blessing Agbebaku acknowledged receipt of the petition, and directed the Clerk of the House, Yahaya Omogbai, to serve the impeachment notice on the Deputy Governor.
The Speaker of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Owan-West), in the same vein issued out seven days ultimatum to the embattled Deputy Governor to respond to the notice of impeachment, just as record however, has it that Shaibu was a strong political ally of Governor Godwin Obaseki until his (Shaibu) governorship ambition divided them apart.
Penpushing also reports that the Governor, contrary to ambition of his Deputy was said to have prefer a former banker, Asue Ighodalo, to succeed him as Governor, who recently won Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governorship ticket.
The Deputy Governor in a contrary dimension and through a parallel primary election in which he was a lone candidate, claimed he was the rightful candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to contest the governorship race
