The Federal High Court in Damaturu, Yobe State on Wednesday dashed the hope of the Nigeria’s Senate President, Senator Ahmad Lawan, to contest the Senatorial seat for Yobe North Senatorial District of the State in 2023

Penpushing reports that, Lawan having failed to secure his party’s nod to run for president, under the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) made frantic efforts to reclaim the party’s ticket for the senatorial district he has represented since 2007.

The contestant at the primary, Bashir Machina who won the election kicked and filed a suit praying the court to rule that he was the bona fide candidate of the party, and also asked the court to order the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to include his name in its final register of candidates for the National Assembly election.

Penpushing further reports that, Machina argued that, the Senate President did not participate in the original All Progressives Congress (APC) Yobe North primary because he was contesting to be the party’s presidential candidate.

The court in the ruling, however, declared that Bashir Machina is the authentic candidate of the party having won the legally recognised primary supervised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Penpushing also reports that, the court ruled that Lawan, , a former university lecturer did not participate in the legally recognised primary election of the party  to select its candidate in the election held on 28 May.
