Calabar carnival tragedy: Seven killed, 29 injured at car rams into fun seekers

The Calabar Carnival on Tuesday turned sour as a car lost control and rammed into a crowd of onlookers, with seven people reported killed and twenty-nine injured, a sad development which brought the activities to an abrupt end.

Penpushing reports that Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Maikano Hassan, who confirmed the incident said the incident occurred in front of the Jumat Mosque in Bogobiri, Calabar, during the Bikers Carnival activity, which was part of the carnival.

The Sector Command disclosed that the injured include 21 male adults, three women, two male children and three female children, adding that they were later rushed to the naval hospital and the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital for medical attention.

Penpushing further reports that, Hassan said the remains of the dead as at the time of filing this report had been deposited in the two hospitals in Calabar, explaining that the crash occurred when a Toyota Camry car lost control and rammed into a crowd of onlookers during the carnival.

The Governor of Cross River State, Ben Ayade, was said to be at the venue with other dignitaries when the accident occurred, while record has it that, the annual carnival had been put on hold for over two years.

Penpushing also reports that in 2020 the carnival was suspended due to coronavirus pandemic, while no official statement was given for its suspension in 2021, as source said facilities for the 2022 edition of the carnival was hurriedly put up.

Meanwhile,the Governor as at the time of this report was reported to have condoled the families of the victims of the sad incident with as promised to bring to book the driver of the vehicle that caused the accident.
