The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) have advocated for establishment of food production centres in each geo-political zones of the country to cushion the effect of food crisis and economic hardship in the country.
Penpushing reports that the South-West body of the union made the call at a press conference after its zonal meeting held in Abeokuta, Ogun State Capital, with a position on need by the Nigerian Government to equally declared a state of emergency on food security.
The Public Relations Officer South-West Olusegun Abatan, reading out resolution of the union, emphasized that there was need for massive importation of agricultural machineries, equipment and agrochemicals, as well as need to revive agricultural extension services in the country.
Penpushing further reports that the senior citizens said the government should open up rural roads for agriculture, and set in motion a culture of road maintenance, appealing to President Bola Tinubu not to scrap the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD).
The pensioners spokesperson explained that, aside seamless payment of pensions and gratuities, the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) had eliminated long queues of pensioners and even death during verification exercises
Penpushing also reports that the union passionately urged the Tinubu led administration on the importance and need to redeem its pledge and be more proactive in tackling the increasing economic hardship.
