The President of Uganda,Yoweri Museveni who has been ruling the country over thirty-five has again been re-elected for another term, following announcement by the Uganda Electoral Commission.
Penpushing reports that, the electoral body said on Saturday that, Museveni of the National Resistance Movement garnered over 5 million (58.64%) of the 9.9 million valid votes cast to defeat other nine contenders
The controversial election which started on Thursday ended on Saturday, after two days of vote counts, while Museveni closest rival, Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) of National Unity Party, polled 34.83% of the total votes cast 34,684 PUs across the country.
Penpushing further reports that, Museveni was born in 1944,and has been President of the country since 1986,wasinvolved in rebellions that toppled Ugandan leaders(Idi Amin(1971-79) and Milton Obote(1980-85) before he captured power in the 1980’s
The sit-tight African President in the mid- to late 1990s, was celebrated by the West as part of a new generation of African leaders, while his presidency has been marred by involvement in the civil war in the Democratic Republic of Congo and other Great Lakes region conflicts.
Penpushing also reports that, this include the rebellion in Northern Ugandan by the Lord’s Resistance Army which caused a humanitarian emergency; and the suppression of political opposition and constitutional amendments scrapping presidential term limits (2005) and the presidential age limit (2017).
