A Non-Governmental Organisation, Promoting Education for Indigent Children Foundation (PEFIC) has organized its second annual public lecture and distribution of textbooks and other learning materials to indigent children.

Penpushing reports that the event themed, ’The Menace of Out-Of-School Children: Causes and Remedies’, was held on Thursday, October 22, 2026 at Alake Hall, Abeokuta Club, Abeokuta, Ogun State Capital.

The ceremony includes participation of twenty schools, with their students as beneficiaries, as well as scholars and number of dignitaries, and groups from various organizations known to be stakeholders in education sector

Penpushing further reports that the led by its dedicated team and volunteers, with support from well-meaning Nigerians, said the gesture was Phase 1, as Phase 2 will target another 1,000 children before December 2026.

The convener, Alhaji Lateef Oridota in his welcome address explained that the focus of the anniversary is to render selfless service to assist the young ones and ensure that no child is not in school due to inadequate financial status of the parent, adding that the timing is critical as Nigeria currently has over 18.3 million out-of-school children according to United Nations Children’s Fund(UNICEF), adding that the foundation was moved by the alarming menace of out-of-school children roaming the streets.

“When we see children hawking in Kuto and Panseke during school hours, we see future leaders wasting away. Poverty should not stop any child from education. That is why PEFIC was created – to Promote Education For Indigent Children. An educated child will not become a criminal tomorrow,” he said.

Penpushing also reports that he said the public lecture will highlight the causes of out of school children and explore possible solutions to the challenge, emphasizing that the distribution of textbooks and other educational materials is also aimed at supporting indigent children and improving their access to learning resources

The convener stated that the body will continue to create educational opportunities for indigent children by providing learning materials and support to help them remain in school, and equally encouraged students to make good use of this opportunity, take their education seriously and work towards a brighter future.

Penpushing further reports that the guest speaker Professor Opeyemi Shoaga of the Faculty of Education, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye stressed the causes and remedies of menace of out of school children.
