A group of senior military officers have staged a coup in Gabon, Central African country attributing their actions to controversial election held over the weekend in the country which they described as not credible.

Penpushing reports that the coupists made this known through an announcement on national television, emphasisng that they seized power in the name of the Gabonese people and have decided to defend the peace by putting an end to the current regime.

The coupists in the same vein cancelled the controversial election to elect a leader, incumbent President Ali Bongo as winning a third term, which led to crisis, and the military officer also dissolved all state institutions and closed the country’s borders.

Penpushing further reports that senior military officers claimed to have the support of the armed forces in carrying out the coup, which is becomes the seventh coup in Africa since 2019, while record has it that the ousted President Bongo has since been in office following the death of his father

The Gabonese Election Centre it is recalled has announced that Bongo had secured 64.27 per cent of the vote compared with 30.77 per cent for his main challenger Albert Ondo Ossa, after a process beset by delays.

Penpushing reports that as at the time of filing this reports sources said gunshots are being heard across the capital, Libreville and the whereabouts of President Bongo, whose family has been in power for decades remains unknown.
