The Senator representing Ogun Central Senatorial District of Ogun State at the national assembly, Senator Shuaib Salisu on Monday engaged market women in the constituency to empower them.

Penpushing reports that the empowerment tagged “Okowa Salisu” gave out which cash support for their trade and businesses at ceremony held in a hall which is a stone throw to the Alake palace, and attracted hundreds of the market women led by their leaders.

The Senator accompanied by some leaders of the All Progressives Congress(APC) from the senatorial district while addressing the market women explained that the project was aimed at improving their economic well-being and overall quality of life

Penpushing further reports that he assured that he would complete the unfinished work on the market hall for the women in his constituency, promising to provide a safer and more comfortable environment for them to sell their goods.

The former Chief of Staff in Ogun State explained that the renovation project will include fixing windows and other infrastructure to improve the overall condition of the hall, just as he highlighted what are the expected benefits of the renovation.

Penpushing also reports that the politician stated that this include improved working conditions for market women – increased foot traffic and economic activities, enhanced community space for social events and other activities

The Senator in an interview with journalists described women as the economic back bone of the family, emphasizing that empowering them is very important and vital, adding that aside giving the women cash, they were also introduced to financial institutions.

Penpushing reports that he disclosed that the beneficiaries were equally given tools such as POS machines to enhance digital transactions and reduce risks like cash theft.

‘Today, it is the turn of the market women, we have done for the students, youths and recently we engaged our Kabiyesis, traditional rulers on capacity building but today we have empowered our women with cash of N100,000 each as to support their businesses’, he stated,

‘We also gave them extra money so that they will not touch the money given to them to support their businesses. We didn’t only give them money but we introduced them to financial institutions, equipped them with tools such as POS machines as to enhance digital transactions’, Salisu said.

‘Women are the economic backbone of the family. If you empower a woman, you empower a family, my own mother was a trader, so I understand their challenges. I will ensure that market women have a safe and conducive environment to sell their goods’.

‘I understand the challenges faced by market women, having a mother who was once a trader, I am committed to supporting our market women and boosting the local economy’, he added.

Penpushing further reports that Salisu explained that the intervention would be reviewed in six months, with prospects for support to traders who successfully utilize the funds.
