The State Security Service (SSS) has arrested some suspects engaged in the sales of the new naira notes, and are reported to have been involved in the brisk illegal business in collaboration with commercial bank officials.
Penpushing reports that the security operatives’ spokesperson Peter Afunanya, made this known in a statement on Monday, adding that some of the currency traders involved and intercepted have confessed on the roles of some bank officials.
“The Department of State Services (DSS) hereby informs the public that it has intercepted some members of organised syndicates involved in the sale of the new redesigned naira notes. In the course of its operations, in this regard in parts of the country, it was also established that some Commercial Bank officials are aiding the economic malfeasance’ Afunanya said.
Penpushing further reports that the Department of State Security (DSS) was silent if the arrested suspects and their collaborators would be prosecuted, but warned the currency racketeers to desist from this ignoble act.
“Appropriate regulatory authorities are, in this same vein, urged to step up monitoring and supervisory activities to expeditiously address the emerging trends. It should be noted that the Service has ordered its Commands and Formations to further ensure that all persons and groups engaged in the illegal sale of the notes are identified. Therefore, anyone with useful information relating to this is encouraged to pass the same to the relevant authorities.”
Penpushing also reports that the illegal activities being carried out by the suspects is ongoing while millions of Nigerians are still scramble to get the new naira notes comprising of N200, N500 and N1,000 denominations
