The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has concluded arrangements to honour its former and late Vice Chancellor, Prof Oye Ibidapo-Obe, with a posthumous award, pointing out that the deceased has contributed immensely to academic research in the institution and beyond.
Penpushing reports that, Ibidapo-Obe died January 3, 2021, and until his death was working on a book centered on the history of Ijesaland, his homestead, with the manuscript at completion stage and searching for a reputable book publisher for the manuscript when the sad incident occurred
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Oluwatoyin Ogundipe at a press conference on Wednesday said the posthumous award is scheduled to take place during the the 51st convocation of the institution in Lagos.
Penpushing further reports that, it is recalled that, during the burial arrangements a special Senate tribute was held on 10th February at the University of Lagos Auditorium Lagos, and tribute night on the 13th February at Trinity House, Zion Center, Victoria Island, Lagos.
The burial programme was also followed with a commendation service on February 15,at Archbishop Vining Memorial Church Cathedral, Lagos as well as a Christian Wake Keep in Ilesa, followed with funeral service held on the 16th February at Holy Trinity Cathedral Omofe, Ilesa, Osun State and was buried within the church premises..
Penpushing also reports that, Ogundipe speaking further disclosed that, in similar vein, the university will also award a posthumous honorary Doctorate degree to Ameyo Stella-Adadevo, a lead Consultant Physician and Endocrinologist at the First Consultant Hospital, at the ceremony”.
The Vice Chancellor said also to be awarded honorary doctorate degrees are Mohammed Indimi, Kessington Adebutu and Biodun Shobanjo, Chairman of Troyka Holdings Ltd,pointing out that, the university has in the last one year, recorded huge success, particularly in the area of research and internalisation infrastructure upgrade.
Penpushing reports that, Ogundipe said the university had also continued to witness growth and developments in other facets, noting that the institution had so far, attracted a total of N14 billion research grants in the last three years, both locally and internationally.
“This is a pointer to the renaissance of research culture in the university. Our researchers also had six patents in 2019 and five in 2020 out of which two, in each year, have been prototyped. Scholars of the university have continued to raise the bar of research excellence’,he said.
“Drawn from departments and faculties, some scholars recently had their research proposals approved for generous funding with grants from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund). Our university is reputable for being one of Nigeria’s leaving institutions, especially in the area of research and innovation.This path, which we have consolidated under the current leadership, has improved our ranking as first in Nigeria and 12th in Africa, just last year’’,Ogundipe stated
Penpushing further reports that, the Vice Chancellor said that the convocation lecture would hold Monday July 5.with the title “National Development and Knowledge Economy in the Digital Age: Leapfrogging SNEs into the 21st Century”.
The Vice Chancellor disclosed that, the lecture would be delivered by the Governor of Central Bank (CBN) Mr Godwin Emefiele.,adding that Pastor Tunde Bakare, Chairman, Citadel Global Community Church would be chairman at the occasion
