The former Governor of Ogun State and veteran journalist Chief Olusegun Osoba has tasked all Nigerian newspapers on the need to explore online publication and be more proactive, as he equally condemned the infiltration of some non-journalists and bloggers that have dominated the media space with fake and unverified news.

Penpushing reports that Osoba gave the charge on Monday while speaking as chairman at the media executives summit held in Abeokuta, Ogun State Capital and charged the Nigerian media leaders to join hands together to fight fake news.

The journalism icon at the summit organized by the by Journalism Clinic and Penpushing Media as the local coordinator emphasized that the Nigerian media should bombard the world news space with facts, as well as, that the media should create credible sources of information online.

Penpushing further reports that the 84-year-old Osoba and a notable politician stressed the need to come up with a forum to legislate and regulate the practice of journalism, stressing that online publications remain the only way to preserve journalism integrity

‘All newspapers should go online and be more proactive. This is the only way to preserve our integrity. We should do more of this, exchange views and see what we can do to self-regulate the profession,” he said.

The former Governor, however, lamented the rate at which journalists are being humiliated and locked up by government agents, pointing out that the media should collectively write and fight against the menace.

Penpushing also reports that Chairman, Newspapers Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria (NPAN) Mallam Kabir Yusuf at the summit with the theme, ‘In Pursuit of Products, Profits and More’ advised the media to inform and report event as it happens without getting involved in the story.

The Chairman, Media Trust Limited equally emphasized the need for newspapers to go back to the basics by highlighting the life side of every serious issue in the course of reporting events, noting that many Nigerian newspapers have neglected the entertainment role of the media profession because of the demands of the advertisers

Penpushing reports that Director of Journalism Clinic, Taiwo Obe earlier in his welcome speech at the summit with over 60 media executives across the country in attendance explained that the event is coming nearly five years since when the first edition was held.

“With huge support and partnerships from, among others, the Lagos State Government, Nigeria LNG Limited, Central Bank of Nigeria, Punch Nigeria Limited, The Cable Newspapers and UAC Foods, we are able to hold the summit with the theme ‘In pursuit of products, profits and more’, he said.
