The Nigeria President Bola Tinubu has opted for democracy installation model introduced in Nigeria by the former Military Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, to solve the ongoing crisis in Niger Republic.
Penpushing reports that Tinubu who is the Chairman of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in a statement by his spokesperson Ajuri Ngelale said the President was of the option and gave the hint of 9-month transition in Niger Republic as done successfully by Abubakar’s military administration in Nigeria
‘President Tinubu noted that Nigeria, under General Abdulsalami Abubakar, instituted a nine-month transition programme in 1998, and it proved very successful, leading the country into a new era of democratic governance’, Ngelale said
Penpushing further reports that Tinubu, whose country has a huge influence on neighbouring Niger Republic gave the option during his meeting with the Nigeria Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), which has been mediating the crisis in Niger Republic
The President who admitted that he was under pressure to authorise military action in Niger Republic to sack the coupists, said he saw no reason why the General Abdulsalami model cannot be replicated in Niger Republic if the coup leaders are sincere.
Penpushing also reports that the coupits had on 26 July, 2023 sacked the democratically elected government of President Mohammed Bazoum and have since detained him with some members of his family, while days after they(coupists) proposed a three-year transition, which has been rejected by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
