Occupational safety association berth in Ogun state

The Occupational Safety and Health Association (OSHA) has concluded arrangement for the berth of its Ogun State Chapter with appointment of officials led by Peace Onuiri as its chairman.

Penpushing reports that, towards this, a press conference was held on Thursday in Abeokuta, Ogun State Capital, to announce the emergence of the association, known to have started operations in Nigeria for about a decade with a vision to make occupational safety and health management an integral part of every sector.

The Chairman of the association, Peace Onuiri while addressing journalists was accompanied by some notable leaders of the association, which include: Chief Dosunmu Adetola(Patron), Prince Olawale Shittu(Director) and Akinola Olumuyiwa

Penpushing further reports that he said, the International Labour Organization (ILO) in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment has recognized the roles and achievements of the association as one of the key stakeholders, playing relevant roles for effective and sustainable national prevention programme in Nigeria

‘We are here today to emphasize on safety, which is our fundamental human needs, under the auspices of OSH Association UK-Nigeria region, which started operations in Nigeria for about a decade now with a vision to make occupational safety and health management an integral part of every sector, she said.

Penpushing also reports that, Onuiri disclosed that, the association is also partnerships with Federal fire service, Ministry of Health as well as other numerous agencies.

The chairperson said, the association has local functional chapters across the country, which Ogun state is one, explaining that, the chapters are engaged in the promotion of occupational safety, Health, Security and Environment best practices in the grassroot communities, with working partnerships with many National and International non-governmental organisations concerned with safety of lives and properties in Nigeria.

Penpushing reports that, she noted that the National Safety and Advocacy Project (2021-2023), reality about the health and safety of Africans is still a messy state, adding that, the world safety index report of 2020 stated that Nigeria is one of the least safe countries in the world

The chairman posited that in view of the above called for strong partnership and synergy with concerned government institutions and private organisation to support the movement of the association National Safety Advocacy Project to revive the Health, Safety, Security and Environmental status of Nigeria before the international community.

Penpushing further reports that, Onuiri said, it is worthy of note the actions of the Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State in ensuring safety and security of lives in the state.

‘One of such example is the creation of the road safety advisory committee, ready to enforce speed limit and other regulations. Therefore, we seek collaboration of other agencies in the state such as the Civil Defense, Fire Service, Immigration, Customs, So-Safe Corps, Amotekun, PCRC, VIO, State Ministries, Community leaders, All Universities and Educational Institutions to join hand in partnership for safety in Ogun State and South West’.

‘It is time for researchers and stakeholders to look inward and embrace local content in the production of safety equipment, one should have expected that Covid-19 pandemic would boost the production of basic quality PPEs. Imagine how much we have spent in importing ordinary face mask!’, she said

‘We call on all and sundry to uphold the mandate of the Occupational Safety and Health Association which is to achieve zero deaths, fatalities and incidents in workplaces through the implementation of preventive strategies in all the sectors of the economy, including the informal sectors in Nigeria’.

‘We hereby request the partnership of all the organisations in Nigeria to join forces to support and provide realistic solutions to Health, Safety, Security and Environmental challenges in Nigeria’, she emphaised.

Penpushing also reports that, disclosed that a world conference by the association is scheduled to hold at the World Trade Centre, Dubai between16th and 18th of January 2022

The chairman added that, professionals from 54 countries will converge to discuss cutting edge technological advances in safety, health, housing and fire, adding that in order to foster and further improve safety culture.

‘We implore the participation of heads of industries, safety and security agencies, government authorities, institutions, professionals, community leaders and private organisations in the INTERSEC 2022 Conference at the World Trade Centre, Dubai between the 16th and 18th of January 2022, where professionals from 54 countries will converge to discuss cutting edge technological advances in safety, Health, Housing and Fire’, she said.

Penpushing further reports that, Onuiri explained that participants  are also to register for the 10th Batch HSE certification course, coming up in January 2022 where they will get a United Kingdom(UK) sealed certificate, training transcript, verification card and others.

The regional administrator of the association, Engr Emmanule Uwalaka in his goodwill message called on relevant agencies and private organization in Ogun State to cooperate with the newly appointed chairman of the association in the state, to ensure proactive extra safety measures in all sectors in the state, especially the critical industries.

The administrator represented by Akinola Olumuyiwa expressed optimism that the newly appointed chairman of the association in Ogun State will proactively address some of the critical issues of safety via safety awareness in all sectors and cooperation with key stakeholders.
