The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) Abeokuta Branch has commended the Ogun State Government for the inauguration of a 15-man administrative team for the Ogun State Electricity Regulatory Commission (OGERC).

Penpushing reports that the Branch Chairman, Engr. Olumayowa Idowu in a statement described the development as a significant step toward the full implementation of the Ogun State Electricity Law (Bill No. 017/OG/2024).

The statement said the professional body recalled its earlier correspondence dated 13th March 2025 (Ref: NSEAbk/Sec/26/043) addressed to the Governor, where it advocated for the urgent operationalization of the State’s electricity framework following the signing of the landmark law.

Penpushing further reports that the Branch pointed out that the recent inauguration aligns with its recommendations and demonstrates the State Government’s commitment to strengthening electricity governance, improving power supply, and ensuring fair tariff structures.

The organisation emphasized that the implementation of the law is time-bound, drawing attention to the directive of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (Order No. NERC/2024/165), which mandates the transfer of regulatory oversight to the state commission effective 24 December 2024, with full transition expected by 23 June 2025.

Penpushing also reports that the branch warned that delays in fully operationalizing the framework could create regulatory gaps affecting consumer protection, licensing, tariff regulation, and dispute resolution within Ogun State.

The body, while commending the progress made urged the Ogun State Government to expedite action on the remaining key components of its earlier submission particularly the full establishment and functionalization of all institutions provided for under the law, clear timelines for the operationalization of the electricity market and inclusive stakeholder engagement during implementation

Penpushing reports that the statement stressed that timely completion of these steps is critical to unlocking the full economic and industrial benefits envisioned in the Electricity Law, including improved energy reliability, increased investor confidence, and enhanced service delivery to residents and businesses across the State.

The branch equally called on the government to put the right peg in the right hole by ensuring that only qualified, experienced, and duly registered professional engineers are engaged in the leadership and technical operations of the new regulatory framework.

Penpushing further reports that the statement stated that this is essential to guarantee technical integrity, regulatory efficiency, and sustainable sector growth, while the branch reaffirmed its readiness to continue partnering with the Ogun State Government by providing professional expertise and technical guidance to ensure the successful implementation of the electricity reform agenda for the benefit of all citizens.
