The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday resolved to send a delegation to United Kingdom to engage with the British High Commission to find more details on the case of organ harvesting which the former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekeremadu and the wife were arrested and being prosecuted.
Penpushing reports that the Senate President,Ahmad Lawan made this known at the end of a closed door session which lasted for about an hour, adding that the delegation of the senate committee on foreign affairs will see the couple.
The Senate President explained that delegation is expected to leave for London in two days, adding that he had a personal engagement with Nigerian High Commissioner to Britain who has done so well to establish contact with Ekweremadu, who has been able to get his team to be in the court in Uxbridge where he was taken to.”
Penpushing further reports that, Lawan said the High Commission has been able to provide some consular services that included the engagement of lawyers who will defend the Ekeremadus, assuring the family
“There will be a delegation to London to see Senator Ekweremadu and his wife. The delegation on the senate committee on foreign affairs will leave in two days. We urge all institutions that can do anything to ensure that they do so, particularly the ministry of foreign affairs. And as for the Nigerian High Commission, we can ask for more but they have done us proud,” he said.
Penpushing also reports that, it is recalled that, the couple were arrested last week by the London Metropolitan Police, for allegedly trafficking David Nwanini with the aim of harvesting his kidney, and subsequently charged to court.
The allegations have it that, the Senator and his wife brought a 15-year-old boy from Nigeria to London with the claim that he was to be given a better life in the country but was actually to harvest his organ to treat their daughter who is suffering from kidney disease.
Penpushing reports that, prosecutors told the Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court in London, that Ekeremadu procured a passport for the boy and claimed he was 21 years old only to discover that he was 15 years old, hence the couple were denied bail.
The Director-General of Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), Idris Jere contrary to the British prosecutors claim on the age of the alleged victim of the organ harvesting, told journalists that the boy was 21 year old
Penpushing further reports If convicted, Ekweremadus risks a maximum of life sentence or 12 months imprisonment or a fine or both on summary conviction under the United Kingdom’s Modern Slavery Act 2015.
“A person guilty of an offence under Section 1 or 2 is liable (a)on conviction on indictment, to imprisonment for life; (b)on summary conviction, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 12 months or a fine or both”, the Act reads
