About 120 queens across Nigeria for the first time converged in Ile-Ife town of Osun State on Thursday for a conference to commemorate the Black Women’s history month and to discuss the impact of royal queens in national development.

Penpushing reports that the conference titled, “The Impact of Oloris (Royal Queens) In National Development”, was organised by Ronke Ogunwusi and Janet Mba-Afolabi under the Queen Moremi Ajasoro initiative and Olori Janet Afolabi Foundation.

The wife of Ooni of Ife, Ronke Ogunwusi who is also the founder of Africa Fashion Week London and Nigeria Week and CEO of Adire Textile hub in her welcome speech explained the reasons for the conference.

Penpushing further reports that the Olori of the Ife Kingdom pointed out that the day was the  first time in history the queens will be coming together to see how they can all work together on different projects to impact in their communities

The Ife queen at the colourful ceremony invited the other participating queens and others to take advantage of the Adire training which is free, explaining that she has trained over 500 women and youths in the trade.

Penpushing also reports that in her keynote address, Olori Janet  Mba-Afolabi, noted that  there are so many challenges in Nigeria today, expressing optimism that their husbands(monarchs) are in the forefront of solving those problems.

The queen charged her colleagues on need to also rise up and support their husbands, and equally urged them to identify problems in the domains, do a problem analysis and strategy on how to solve them.

Penpushing reports that she emphasized that if queens make impacts with their projects in the communities, such impacts can be replicated at the national level, and also encouraged them to start small.

The keynote speaker narrated how she personally teaches English language for free and also feed her students with snacks, recalling that she started with 10 students, and that as at today she has over 150 students and empowered some set of traders with N20, 000 each

‘Today I have over 150 students. I also empowered some set of traders with 20,000 Naira each and ask them to pay back 5000 Naira monthly so we can give the money to others. None of them defaulted. They all paid the loan back and on time too. This means that you do not need huge sum of money to impact on people”, she said

Penpushing further reports the wife of Osun State Governor, Ngozi Adeleke, who was the special guest of honour, in her goodwill message commended the organisers the event, adding that she is also committed to supporting and empowering women to develop Osun State.
