The Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF), and the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) has inaugurated Economic Roundtable steering committee saddled with the responsibility to work on policy issues that strengthen institutions and democracy.
Penpushing reports that the inauguration which was held virtually had in attendance Governors Kayode Fayemi(Ekiti), Muhammed Yahaya(Nasarawa), Engr. Seyi Makinde(Oyo),and the, Mr. Eric Igwe(Deputy Governor of Eboyi State).
The inaugural was also attended by Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) Board Members, Mr. Asue Ighodalo, Mr. Folorunsho Philips, Mr. Udeme Ufort, Mrs Aminat Maina, and Mr. Kyari Bukar and other representatives of the private sector which include Mrs Funke Opeke.
The Forum Chairman, Governor Kayode Fayemi while formally inaugurating the steering committee noted that the idea was that the steering committee will strengthening institutional relationships between all tiers of government.
Penpushing further reports that earlier in his welcome address, the chairman of Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG), Mr Asue Ighodalo stated that the program was based on the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between both institutions in October 2020.
The Chairman pointed out that it has become apparent for subnational government to step forward and help create an industrialized and diversified Nigeria economy, adding that rising inflation, depreciation currency, falling foreign reserves and host of economic problems make it imperative for subnational government to become empowered to drive long term economic growth.
Penpushing also reports that Ighodalo stated that the 26th Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) recommended actions include enhancing subnational competitiveness and urged states to focus on their strength and identified their endowment to create an enabling environment that attract investments.
The group chairman reiterated that there is need for states to increase investment on critical infrastructures that can help to drive growth into various sectors of rural and state economic,and also urged the state to implement the recommendation of 26th Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) so as to build strong institutional frame work to fix institutional problems.
