The Defence Headquarters has disclosed that its X account has been “compromised,” and advised the public to disregard information posted there, just as a check on the account showed that it has been flooded with countless cryptocurrency-related posts.
Penpushing reports that the spokesperson of the Defence Headquarters, Major-General Samaila Uba, made this known in a statement posted on Facebook Saturday evening, adding that the case was being treated as a “cybersecurity matter.”
The Major General in the statement explained that technical measures have been activated to secure the account and prevent further unauthorised access, as the account, which carries a verification badge, has more than 980,000 followers, however, its name, military gallery and reposts remain intact.
“The Defence Headquarters assures the public that efforts are ongoing to fully restore control of the official account Consequently, members of the public are advised to disregard any suspicious, unauthorised or misleading content that may be posted from the account during this period’, the statement read
Penpushing further reports that Uba added the account is one of the official channels through which military authorities disseminate information about combat operations, changes in hierarchies, and other defence matters.
The military spokesperson did not state when the account was hacked, however, it appears that the hijackers have been consistent in posting automated cryptocurrency messages, with many of the posts made 19 hours ago.
Penpushing also reports that Uba said the Defence Headquarters prioritises “highest standards of information security,” while ensuring the public “receive accurate, timely and credible information on the activities and operations of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.”
The spokesperson in the statement urged the public to rely on other official communication channels—Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp— for “accurate, verified and timely information.”
Penpushing reports that the statement emphasized that the authorities appreciate the understanding and vigilance of the public and will provide further updates as necessary.
