The former first lady of Ogun State Olufunso Amosun on Wednesday under the platform of UPLIFT Development Foundation flag-off of the 2026 free breast and cervical cancer screening held at the Federal Medical Center (FMC) Idi-Aba, Abeokuta,
Penpushing reports that Amosun at the event pointed out that cancer is a serious health challenge, but never a death sentence to patients, however, added that the annual exercise goes beyond routine medical checks to offering lifesaving interventions and timely healthcare access.
The wife of former Governor, urged participating women to embrace preventive care, overcome fear through early action, and act as ambassadors by spreading awareness within their respective communities and families.
Penpushing further reports that she highlighted global and local statistics, pointing out that breast cancer incidence in Nigeria has surged by nearly 300 percent over the past three decades.
The former first lady cited data from the Global Cancer Observatory (GLOBOCAN) 2022, disclosing that Nigeria accounted for 32,278 new breast cancer cases and 16,332 deaths, representing the continent’s highest burden.
Penpushing also reports that Amosun emphasized that early detection remains the most effective tool to combat high mortality rates, stating that early-stage diagnosis yields survival rates exceeding 90 percent, compared to less than 30 percent for late-stage presentations.
The wife of former governor equally reflected on the 2025 edition, recalling that over 600 women benefited from the screening, with 22 individuals identified with breast-related issues.
“Out of these, 11 women diagnosed with suspicious breast lumps underwent free lumpectomy surgeries and post-operative care funded entirely by the foundation in November 2025’, Amosun stated.
” Since inception in 2012, the UPLIFT Development Foundation has focused on cancer awareness, screening, and equipping local care facilities, alongside broader humanitarian efforts targeting women, widows, and vulnerable groups across Ogun State”, she said.
Penpushing reports that the Medical Consultant and Surgeon at Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Dr Ebenezer Nkom, in his remarks de-emphasised the efficacy of native remedial measures explaining that early clinical detection will prevent mortality.
