The grandson of the late Premier of the Western Region, Obafemi Awolowo, Olusegun Awolowo has been reported dead, and this was made known by the family on Thursday in a statement.

Penpushing reports that the Awolowo family said it will receive condolences at residence of the deceased who was born September 27, 1963 between 2 and 4 p.m. daily, adding that it was with extreme heavy hearts to announce the passing

The family in the statement described the deceased at beloved husband, father and grandfather, who was born on September 27, 1963 trained as a lawyer, and until his death served as the Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council from 2013 to 2021.

Penpushing further reports that Awolowo as Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) chief, he oversaw several initiatives aimed at boosting Nigeria’s non-oil exports and strengthening the country’s global trade presence.

The late Awolowo until his death, was the President of the National Trade Promotion Organisations (TPOs) from Economic of West African State (ECOWAS) member states.

Penpushing also reports that Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has described the passing of Awolowo jr as a deeply profound personal loss, adding that the death of the lawyer at 62 came as a rude shock.

The Governor described the deceased as a gentleman par excellence, a voice of courage, and a consummate public servant, noting that he received the news with utter disbelief and will forever treasure memories of their acquaintance.

Penpushing reports that Abiodun pointed out that, the deceased was affable, highly intelligent, and extremely easy-going, traits which endeared him to many and made his demise even more painful.

“It is extremely hard to process the news that Segun Awolowo Jr. is gone, but we submit unreservedly to the will of the Almighty God, who has called him to His bosom. We are deeply heartbroken, but we take consolation in the exemplary lessons his life taught us, for he was indeed a jolly good fellow’, he wrote

Penpushing further reports that Abiodun noted that although Awolowo Jr. was born two months after the death of his father and was acquainted with grief from childhood, he rose above life’s challenges to become an icon in his own right.

The Governor recalled that after being called to the Bar in December 1989, Awolowo worked with the law firms of Abayomi Sogbesan and Co. and GOK Ajayi and Co., before serving in the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo as Special Assistant on Traditional Institutions, Legal Due Diligence, and Legal Matters.

Penpushing also reports that Abiodun added that his service as Special Assistant to President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, as Secretary for Social Development, and later Secretary of Transport between 2007 and 2011, as well as his tenure as Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council from 2013 to 2021, remained exemplary and unblemished.

The Governor said Awolowo’s dedication to national development earned him the unanimous election, in July 2021, as President of National Trade Promotion Organizations (TPOs) from ECOWAS member state.

Penpushing reports that Abiodun stated that the deceased earthly sojourn may have been brief, but it was hugely impactful, and commiserated with his wife and children, the entire Awolowo family, and Nigerians at large, praying that God grants them the fortitude to bear the loss.
