Theme: “Restoring Electoral Integrity: The Path to Good Governance and Public Accountability” Held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, Ogun State

The 8th Annual Anniversary Lecture of Penpushing Media was held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, Ogun State, with the theme: “Restoring Electoral Integrity: The Path to Good Governance and Public Accountability.”

The lecture brought together traditional rulers, jurists, senior advocates, public officials, media professionals, academics, civil society actors and other stakeholders to critically examine the challenges confronting Nigeria’s democracy and explore pathways towards credible elections, accountable leadership and stronger democratic institutions.

Following extensive deliberations, participants made the following observations and recommendations:

1. Electoral Integrity and Democratic Confidence

Participants observed that credible elections remain the foundation of legitimate government, national stability and sustainable development. They noted that declining public confidence in the electoral process, reflected in voter apathy and reduced participation, poses a significant threat to democratic growth.

The gathering emphasised that citizens must not withdraw from the democratic process but actively participate in strengthening electoral institutions through civic engagement, voter education and responsible citizenship.

2. Political Party Reform and Electoral Accountability

Participants identified weak internal democracy within political parties, imposition of candidates, excessive monetisation of nominations, vote-buying and disregard for electoral laws as major obstacles to credible elections.

The meeting stressed that electoral integrity must begin with transparent and democratic party primaries, where candidates emerge through genuine participation rather than financial influence, manipulation or exclusion.

3. Integrity of the Judiciary and the Legal Profession

Participants reaffirmed that an independent and credible judiciary remains indispensable to democratic stability and the protection of constitutional governance.

Politicians were urged to refrain from corrupting or attempting to influence judges, while members of the legal profession were encouraged to uphold the highest ethical standards and protect the dignity and independence of the justice system.

The meeting noted that public confidence in democracy is closely linked to confidence in the judiciary.

4. Poverty, Governance and Social Responsibility

Participants observed that democracy cannot achieve its full meaning where citizens continue to struggle with poverty, unemployment and limited access to essential social services.

The gathering recalled the transformative impact of the free education policy of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and stressed the need for renewed commitment to education, healthcare, social protection, agriculture, employment creation and economic empowerment.

Government was urged to fully implement existing social welfare laws and programmes designed to support vulnerable citizens and improve living standards.

5. Role of Media and Communication Professionals

Participants recognised the media as a vital pillar of democracy, accountability and public enlightenment.

Journalists and communication professionals were urged to uphold integrity by providing accurate information, conducting proper profiling of political candidates and focusing on competence, character, experience and policy direction rather than personality-driven campaigns.

The meeting stressed that political communication must serve the public interest and should not become a tool for misinformation or manipulation.

6. Citizen Participation and Civic Education

Participants emphasised the importance of civic education in building an informed and responsible electorate.

The meeting called for stronger civic and history education in schools and encouraged citizens, particularly professionals and members of the middle class, to take greater interest in electoral and governance processes.

7. Transparency, Accountability and Anti-Corruption

Participants called for improved transparency in public administration through effective monitoring of government budgets, public expenditure and implementation of development projects.

The meeting supported stronger anti-corruption measures, recovery of stolen public resources and the utilisation of recovered funds for education, healthcare and other social development programmes.

Participants also advocated reforms that would promote greater transparency in asset declaration by public officers.

8. Security, Human Rights and Inclusive Governance

Participants expressed concern over insecurity, unlawful killings and threats to citizens’ fundamental rights.

Government was urged to strengthen the protection of lives and property, secure educational institutions, rescue victims of criminal activities and ensure justice for victims of human rights violations.

The meeting further called for greater inclusion of persons with disabilities and full implementation of laws protecting their rights.

9. Electoral Reform and Good Governance

Participants agreed that the ultimate objective of electoral reform must be the emergence of leadership that is competent, accountable and committed to improving the welfare of citizens.

The gathering called for continuous improvement of electoral laws, stronger democratic institutions, timely resolution of election disputes and reforms capable of restoring public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system.

Conclusion

Participants reaffirmed that restoring electoral integrity requires collective commitment from political leaders, citizens, the judiciary, media, civil society organisations and all stakeholders.

The meeting resolved to continue promoting democratic values, accountability and responsible citizenship towards building a Nigeria where elections genuinely reflect the will of the people and governance delivers meaningful benefits to citizens.
