Nigeria has taken a major step forward in mental healthcare with the official launch of the Ikeja Specialist Clinic and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Centre, in partnership with United Kingdom (UK)-based Transforming Mind Solutions.

Penpushing reports that the new centre will be  opened on Sunday, October 10, 2025 in Ikeja, Lagos, to mark World Mental Health Day, and will bring Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy to the country for the first time.

The clinic is reflecting a growing national commitment to tackling mental health challenges with modern, evidence-based solutions, and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is affirmed as a safe, non-invasive treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate targeted areas of the brain.

Penpushing further reports that it is especially effective for people living with treatment-resistant depression, as well as those experiencing anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) unlike medication does not rely on chemicals and has minimal side effects, making it a valuable new option for Nigerian patients.

Penpushing also reports that Consultant Psychiatrist and Chief Executive Officer at the Ikeja Specialist Clinic and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Centre Dr. Olufemi Oluwatayo, said the development was a landmark for mental health in Nigeria

“This is a landmark moment for mental health in Nigeria. Too many patients suffer in silence, or without effective treatment, because existing options haven’t worked for them. By introducing TMS here in Lagos, we are offering hope, recovery, and dignity to those who need it most’, he said

Penpushing reports that the Chief Executive Officer of Transforming Mind Solutions, Richard Williams, on his own part added that Nigeria deserves access to the same level of mental health innovation that has already changed lives in the United Kingdom.

‘Nigeria deserves access to the same level of mental health innovation that has already changed lives in the UK. By opening here on World Mental Health Day, we are underlining our belief that mental health is a global priority — and that Nigerians should not be left behind in accessing cutting-edge care, Williams stated.

Penpushing further reports that in similar vein, Medical Director at Transforming Mind Solutions Professor Alex O’Neill-Kerr, pointed out that Nigeria has a young and dynamic population with increasing awareness of mental health needs.

‘TMS offers a proven, safe, and effective therapy that can make a lifechanging difference for patients who may have felt they had no other options. The launch comes at a time when demand for mental health services in Nigeria is rapidly growing’.

Penpushing also reports that the Medical Director emphasized that rising awareness, coupled with the need for effective treatments, has created an urgent need for new approaches, adding that the partnership between Ikeja Specialist Clinic and Transforming Mind Solutions ensures that Nigerians can now access worldclass care within their own communities.

Meanwhile, Transforming Mind Solutions founded in United Kingdom has built a strong reputation for clinical excellence and compassionate care, with the Lagos centre now open, Nigeria becomes the first country outside United Kingdom to host a clinic, paving the way for wider access to advanced mental health treatments across Africa.
