The Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi has disclosed that he does not engage service of domestic staff to clean his house, rather he does that himself.

Penpushing reports that Obi made the explanation in a statement posted via his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, while responding to public commentary generated by his recent appearance at a charity event showing him serving food to poor and vulnerable citizens in Imo State.

The former governor of Anambra State, emphasized that, that was his way of life, stressing that when guests visit his home, he served them himself, explaining that his humility is not a campaign strategy

“I live simply. I sweep, I clean, because for me, humility is not a campaign strategy; it is a way of life. Even now, in private life, I do not have a house help. When guests visit my home, I serve them myself’, Obi wrote

Penpushing further reports that Obi described the event where he was seeing serving food as a non-political gathering, adding that focused on service to the poor, was not publicised by his team.

The controversial politician said third parties shared the materials online, attracting both praise and criticism, explaining that the initiative was designed to promote a culture of service among the wealthy and powerful.

“The Jubilee of Hope is designed for the rich to come down from their high places, even if just for a moment, and serve the poor—not as a show, but as a symbol of the society we must build,” he said.

Penpushing also reports that Obi said several other notable Nigerians equally participated in the exercise, including Cardinal John Onaiyekan, Senator Osita Izunaso, and the former Chairman of Seplat, A.B.C. Orjiako.

The former Governor said he stayed longer at the event only because many of the poor attendees requested that he serve them personally, and cannot afford to ignore them.

“I could not ignore them. Otherwise, there was nothing special about what I did. Service is not special, it is expected. We cannot speak of building a New Nigeria while ignoring the hungry, the forgotten, and the poor’, he said.
