The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has re-elected Charles Eze Anaba, Editor-in-Chief of Vanguard newspaper at its National President alongside other officials to run the affairs of the guild for another term.

Penpushing reports that the election took place on Friday during the Guild’s Biennial National Convention at the International Conference Centre, Enugu, while returned unopposed of Anaba was attributed to his widely acknowledged record of administrative excellence.

The other elected officials include Onuoha Ukoh, who is the Managing Director of The Sun newspaper, and clinched the position of General Secretary with 218 votes, defeating his closest rivals, Wole Sogunle and Qasim Akinreti, who polled 45 and 30 votes respectively.

Penpushing further reports that also elected include Sabastine Abu as Deputy President who scored 175 votes, defeating Mohammed Sanusi Jubrin, while elected Vice President, West was Karbi Alabi

The others are Vice Presidents: Hamza Idris and Sheddy Ozoene, Treasurer: Iyobosa Uwugiaren, Assistant Secretary: Gabriel Akinadewo, and Publicity Secretary Charles Kanu, while members elected into the Standing Committee from various zones are: Rose Moses, Ejiro Umukoro, Olabisi Deji-Folutile, Juliet Bumah, Umoru Ibrahim, Paulyn Ugbodaga, Chinedu Max Egere, and Ikpong Essien-Udoh.

Penpushing also reports that the convention, which attracted over 400 editors from across Nigeria, was graced by notable media veterans and public figures among them Chief Olusegun Osoba (former Governor Ogun State) Dr. John Momoh (founder of Channels Television); Chief Onyema Ugochukwu former Chairman NDCC and Femi Adesina former Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to President Muhammadu Buhari

The re-elected President in his speech urged media practitioners to always promote peace, justice and fairness in order to ensure a good society, equally urged journalists and columnists to exhibit maturity in their reportage to eschew bias.

Penpushing reports that Eze while speaking noted that the theme of the Conference: “Building a Secure and Cohesive Nigeria: The Role of Dialogue, Inclusion and the Media” was apt stressing that carrying everyone along and discussion as brothers and sisters was vital for genuine development.

“Insecurity in the north, most especially, North East and North West undoubtedly slows development and unless collective efforts are made it will persist. The killings in the Middle Belt are most unfortunate and needles of bloodshed and mass displacement”, he stated.

Penpushing further reports that the Governor of Enugu State, Dr Peter Mbah charged media practitioners to use their tools to ensure justice, fairness and progress prevail throughout the nation.

The Governor who is a lawyer, in the same vein, called on the editors to maintain cordial relationship amongst them with a view to using it to better the society, explaining that he was poised to transform Enugu into a major city in the world and promised to take them round the city to see some projects executed so far.

Penpushing also reports that the Chairman of the occasion and Chairman of Channels Television, Mr John Momoh urged journalists to be guided by the ethics and rules of the profession in their reportage.

“Journalists should always be honest, involve in shaping public opinion and ensure that there is genuine influence of the national mood for a better society where rule of law reigns supreme”, he said.

Penpushing reports that the father of the day and veteran journalist, Chief Segun Osaba stressed the need for neighborhood and state policing noting that insecurity has profoundly dealt with the nation.

The former Governor of Ogun State commended Governor Mbah for security digitalization pointing out that it was the in thing in developed nations.

‘Dr Mbah, continue with your good work in Enugu State as some Smart Green Schools emerge, good road network springs and welfare of the citizen taken care of’, Osoba emphasised
