The Nigerian Police has disclosed that the national chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure was arrested over petition against him, which bothers on a case of conspiracy, brutal assault and grievous harm and conduct likely to cause breach of public peace.

Penpushing reports that the Police Public Relations Officer, Zone 5 Tijani Momoh gave the explanation, stressing that the action followed petition written by national youth leader of Labour Party (LP) Anslem Eragbe.

“A petition was written against him ( Abure) by  Eragbe to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the IGP endorsed the petition to the AIG Zone 5 to investigate. A case of conspiracy, brutal assault and grievous harm and conduct likely to cause breach of public peace’, Momoh stated.

‘You would recall last year that Eragbe was brutally assaulted and injured, vehicle smashed, laptop stolen while trying to organise a congress of the party. We are working on that petition that was recently endorsed by the IGP for the AIG to investigate’, he added.

Penpushing further reports that it is recalled that Abure was arrested on Wednesday after honouring a scheduled security meeting with Nigeria’s secret police and the State Security Services (SSS) in Benin City.

The Labour Party (LP) is known to be factionalised into two with Lamidi Apapa leading a faction while Abure held a faction last year, before the court resolved the case which recognised Abure as the chairman of the party.

Penpushing also reports that Eragbe, who was suspended as the national youth leader of the party was loyal to Apapa’s faction, while in December it was reported that Eragbe and another person suspected to be a member of Apapa’s faction were apprehended by supporters of the party in Edo state over their alleged plans to conduct a primary election for Labour Party (LP) candidates ahead of the 2024 Governorship election in Edo State.

The sources disclosed that some Labour Party (LP) supporters in Edo state were seen in a viral video beating the two, however, as at the time of filing this reports the police zonal spokesperson said Abure was released late last night.
