The Coupists in Niger Republic who forcefully took over power from the democratically elected President of the country have declared that it is avoiding war as being envisaged by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)

Penpushing reports that the leader of the mutineers General Abdourahamane Tchiani, made this known on Saturday, but pointed out that they(coupists) would, however, resist any manifestation of  such war, stressing that neither the army or people of the country is interested in war

The coupists, added that the member countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) failed to realise that Niger Republic has become the key to containing the region from destabilisation against the backdrop of increased terrorist activity.

Penpushing further reports that Tchiani added that the sanctions imposed against his country were aimed at putting pressure on the rebels, and not at finding a solution to the current situation, adding that  rebels do not seek to seize power in the country but rather seek to come to a solution that would meet the interests of the people.

The rebels it is recalled had on July 26,2023 overthrown the government of President Mohammed Bazoum and also detained him till date, while all efforts by the West African leaders , and the United States of America(USA) call for return of the sacked President has been ignored by the coupists

Penpushing also reports that following the coup, Economic Community of West African States(ECOWAS) suspended all financial aid to Niger Republic, froze rebels’ assets, and imposed a ban on commercial flights to and from the country.

The Economic Community of West African States(ECOWAS) Commissioner for Political Affairs Abdel-Fatau Musah  on Friday said that  general staff chiefs had agreed on a date for the beginning of military intervention, but would not make it public.
