The grandmother of the former President of United States of America (USA),Barack Obama, Sarah Obama has died while receiving treatment for an undisclosed ailment at a hospital in Kisumu, Western Kenya.
Penpushing reports that, Obama in a twitter message posted announced the demise of the grandmother who died at 99, adding that he and his family are mourning the loss, stressing that the deceased would be missed
“My family and I are mourning the loss of our beloved grandmother, Sarah Ogwel Onyango Obama, affectionately known to many as ‘Mama Sarah’ but known to us as ‘Dani’ or Granny. We will miss her dearly, but we’ll celebrate with gratitude her long and remarkable life”,Obama wrote
Penpushing further reports that, Obama recalled that, when the family had difficulties, the home of the deceased was a refuge for her children and grandchildren, adding that her presence was a constant, stabilizing force
“Although not his birth mother, Granny would raise my father as her own and it was in part thanks to her love and encouragement that he was able to defy the odds and do well enough in school to get a scholarship to attend an American university. When our family had difficulties, her homestead was a refuge for her children and grandchildren, and her presence was a constant, stabilizing force.”
Penpushing also reports that, the late Obama, a Muslim, was born in 1922 as part of western Kenya’s Luo ethnic group, and spent decades as the head of a foundation to educate girls and orphans, something she felt strongly about as she could not read herself,
The President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta in his tribute said the passing away of the woman was a big blow to the country, adding that Kenya has lost a strong virtuos woman, and a matriarch who held together the Obama family and was an icon of family values.
“The passing away of Mama Sarah is a big blow to our nation. We’ve lost a strong, virtuous woman. A matriarch who held together the Obama family and was an icon of family values”,Kenyatta wrote
