Fifty passengers which include pupils of Islamiya School going for the Maulud celebration aboard a boat have been feared dead after the boat capsized on Tuesday evening on the Bagwai river in Bagwai Local Government Area of Kano State.
Penpushing reports that a resident identified as Abubakar Ado said the boat was conveying passengers from Badau village to Bagwai town, the council headquarters, when the sad incident occurred.
The resident explained that as at the time of this report a rescue mission was ongoing involving local fishermen, fire service officials and the police, adding that the boat was reported to be overloaded with over 50 people.
Penpushing further reports that, Kano State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Kiyawa,in response said seven of the passengers in the boat were rescued after the accident, adding that the others are still missing.
The police spokesman, however, did not provide the number of the passengers in the boat, but sources in the community said the boat was reported to be overloaded with over 50 people, and also confirmed that number of the passengers were still missing.
Penpushing also reports that, it is recalled that, in 2008, at least 26 persons died in the same river while accompanying a bride to her husband’s house in the same Badau village, while in the previous incident, the boat was carrying 42 passengers, including children. Only four of them survived.
